Guerin continues torrid streak

12/5/2001

ATLANTA (AP) -- Bill Guerin had never scored two goals so
quickly.

Guerin scored twice in an 18-second span of the third period,
leading the Boston Bruins to a 3-2 victory Tuesday night over the
Atlanta Thrashers.

"I imagine it's pretty deflating," Guerin said. "We got a
couple of breaks."

Guerin has scored in four straight games and in seven of 10. The
Bruins, who also had two assists from Jozef Stumpel, improved to
7-0-1-2 this season when Guerin has a goal.

Boston, which won for the seventh time in 10 games, came back
from a two-goal deficit to end a two-game losing streak in Atlanta.

The Bruins outshot the Thrashers 35-25, and didn't allow a shot
after Thrashers goalie Milan Hnilicka was pulled for an extra
skater with 56 seconds remaining.

Brian Rolston scored his team-leading 12th goal 19:26 into the
second period to bring Boston within 2-1. Glen Murray made a pass
from the left circle to Rolston, who was charging from the top of
the slot.

"We were doing such a good job for two periods, and late in the
second period we made a terrible mistake," Atlanta coach Curt
Fraser said. "Everybody was in great spots except for our defense.
They put themselves in a tough position. We played a 2-on-1 wrong.
It was like we made two mistakes and -- boom, it's in our net."

Byron Dafoe made 23 saves for the Bruins.

Ilya Kovalchuk had a goal and an assist for Atlanta, which has
lost three of four and has an NHL-low 16 points. Kovalchuk scored
on a breakaway from the top of the right circle 12:55 into the
second to give the Thrashers a 2-0 lead.

Atlanta went up 1-0 when rookie Dany Heatley scored the game's
only power-play goal. Tony Hrkac faked a wraparound shot before
feeding the puck to Kovalchuk in the crease. Kovalchuk's wrist shot
failed, but Heatley punched in the rebound for his ninth goal and
team-high 19th point.

"First period, we came out and just kind of skated," Boston
coach Robbie Ftorek said. "In the third, we came out and played
like we're supposed to."

Guerin ripped his first shot on goal past Hnilicka's stick side.
Taking Nick Boynton's pass from the top of the slot, Guerin hit the
puck as hard as he could from the bottom of the left circle.

"I didn't want to take any chances," Guerin said. "When you
have an opportunity, you have to drill them in."

Guerin fired his second shot from the bottom of the right circle
and under Hnilicka's pads.
