Thrashers find motivation, beat 'Canes

ESTERO, Fla. (AP) -- Rookie center Eric Staal scored two goals as
Carolina defeated Atlanta 4-1 Saturday night in an NHL preseason
game.

Staal, the second overall pick in June's draft, broke a
scoreless tie at the 12:45 mark of the first period by wristing a
shot past Thrashers goalie Byron Dafoe.

Jeff O'Neill and Erik Cole also scored for Carolina, while Ron
Francis, Tomas Kurka and Pavel Brendl each had two assists for the
Hurricanes.

Kamil Piros scored with 4:13 left for Atlanta, spoiling Carolina
goalie Kevin Weekes' shutout bid.

Dafoe, playing his second game in as many nights because
scheduled starter Pasi Nurminen was scratched due to a sore back,
gave up four goals on 26 shots.
