Toronto, Boston lead Northeast with 99 points

TORONTO (AP) -- Gary Roberts' two-point effort helped the Toronto Maple Leafs get back into first place.

Roberts had a goal and an assist, and the Maple Leafs moved into a tie for first place in the Northeast Division by rallying for a 4-2 victory over the Atlanta Thrashers on Monday night.

Toronto is tied with Boston with 99 points. The third-place Ottawa Senators have 98.

Toronto has more wins than Boston (43 vs. 39), but the Bruins have two games in hand (four games left vs. two left).

"It's just amazing how tight it really is," Roberts said. "Every day you look at the standings and you go from second to fourth to sixth. We're going to be doing a lot of scoreboard watching the next few days."

Toronto started slowly, trailing 2-0 in the first period before scoring the next four goals.

Maple Leafs goalie Ed Belfour made 22 saves, including several impressive stops throughout.

Toronto played without Owen Nolan, who will be sidelined at least three weeks because of a knee injury sustained in Saturday's tie against Ottawa.

Dany Heatley and Serge Aubin scored for the Thrashers.

"We were aware it was a big game for them, but we have guys that are fighting for jobs. I can't fault our effort," Atlanta coach Bob Hartley said.

Heatley, standing alone in front of the net, gave Atlanta a 1-0 lead at 4:47 of the first by batting a rebound out of the air and past Belfour. Just over a minute later, Aubin scored after getting to a loose puck before a defenseman or Belfour could.

Brian Leetch got Toronto going by making a pass from behind the net to Tie Domi, whose one-timer cut it to 2-1 at 13:08 of the first.

Alexander Mogilny's one-timer tied it with 47 seconds left in the first. Roberts sent Atlanta defenseman Frantisek Kaberle to the ice with a check before making a pass from behind the net to Mogilny.

Roberts gave Toronto the lead after his shot deflected off Atlanta defenseman Andy Sutton's skate and in at 3:44 of the third. Nik Antropov made it 4-2 during a power play by putting a rebound past goalie Pasi Nurminen.

Game notes

The NHL approved the sale of the Thrashers on Monday, and the new owners expect to take over in the next few days. A nine-man group headed by Boston businessman Steve Belkin agreed to buy the Thrashers, the Atlanta Hawks and Philips Arena for $250 million from Time Warner in September. ... Thrashers G Kari Lehtonen won his first three career starts, allowing four goals, but Hartley started Nurminen. ... Atlanta's Ivan Majesky smiled after almost scoring into his own net in the first. Nurminen had to make a sprawling save after a pass hit off Majesky's skate.
