Flames burn Blues, move atop Northwest Division

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) -- Jarome Iginla showed off his scoring -- and fighting -- skills in one of his best games of the season.

The Calgary captain scored twice and had a spirited fight with Barret Jackman in the Flames' 3-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Thursday night.

"We want to be a hard, physical team to play against and fighting does happen in that," Iginla said. "Our fight, whoever it is on our team, it pumps us up."

Shean Donovan also had a goal to help the Flames move into first place in the Northwest Division, a point ahead of Colorado. Lee Stempniak scored for St. Louis, which lost in regulation for the first time in seven games.

Donovan opened the scoring in the first period, and Iginla made it 2-0 on a power play 28 seconds into the second. Curtis Sanford stopped Mike Leclerc from in close, but Iginla shoveled in the rebound for his 26th goal of the season.

Stempniak ended Miikka Kiprusoff's shutout bid with 6:13 left in the third, and Iginla completed the scoring with an empty-net goal.

"We're right near the bottom of the league in offense and as forwards, we take it personally," Iginla said. "If you look around the room, every single one of us has more to give and wants to be better."

In between his goals, Iginla fought Jackman.

"I was battling him in the corner and knocked him down and he doesn't like losing battles and neither do I. He got up all fired up as he normally does," Jackman said. "I was trying to fire us up a little bit too, stick up for myself and for the team, but I guess it didn't work out the way we planned."

Jackman and Iginla were both in the penalty box after trying to fight late in the second period. When those penalties ended, they met at center ice, took their helmets off and had a spirited bout.

"You don't want him to drop the gloves all the time because he's our star player," Flames defensemen Andrew Ference said. "But when he does, nobody's too disappointed because that means he's fired up and ready to go."

Game notes

Newly acquired defenseman Cale Hulse made his debut for Calgary and took three minor penalties. Hulse, in his second stint with the team, teamed with rookie Dion Phaneuf ... St. Louis defenseman Dennis Wideman was a healthy scratch for the first time since being recalled from Peoria on Nov. 8 ... The Flames are 9-0-0 when Iginla has a multiple-point game.
