DALLAS -- Brad Richards converted in the third round of the shootout after scoring a goal in regulation to lift the Dallas Stars to a 4-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday night in the preseason opener for both teams.
Neither team was successful in the first two rounds before Richards, who played for the Lightning from 2000-08, beat rookie goaltender Jaroslav Janus.
Stars rookie goalie Tyler Beskorowany stopped Martins Karsums in the third round to seal the win.
Blair Jones' rebound put Tampa Bay in front 3-2 at 5:55 of the third period.
James Neal's goal at 16:46 of the period off a setup by Richards drew Dallas even at 3.
Loui Eriksson and Richards had first-period power-play goals for Dallas.
Tampa Bay rallied in the second period on Todd Fedoruk's even-strength goal and Brett McClain's power-play tally with 28.2 seconds left in the period.
Marty Turco stopped 11 of 13 shots for Dallas before he was replaced by Beskorowany at 11:52 of the second period.
After the game, the Stars announced they'd signed Beskorowany to an entry-level contract. Beskorowany, Dallas' second-round pick in 2008, spent the last two seasons with Owen Sound of the Ontario Hockey League.
Tampa Bay's Antero Niittymaki stopped 13 of 15 shots in the first two periods before giving way to Janus at the start of the third period.
