VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Gregory Stewart scored on a power-play breakaway with 7:18 left and the Edmonton Oilers beat the Vancouver Canucks 3-2 in exhibition play Wednesday night.

Ben Ondrus and Chris Vande Velde also scored, and defenseman Ryan Whitney had three assists to help the Oilers open the preseason with a victory despite dressing less than a dozen NHL regulars against a Vancouver team loaded with top players. Martin Gerber opened in goal for Edmonton, stopping all 14 shots he faced.

Daniel Sedin scored on a power play and Peter Schaefer added a short-handed goal for the Canucks (0-3). Roberto Luongo, making his first start, stopped 23 of 25 shots through two periods for Vancouver.
