As always, it's been a busy offseason around the Rangers. And even though they didn't sign Tony Amonte as had been rumored, the Rangers made enough changes to give themselves a significantly new look in 2002-03. Will it be enough? We asked ESPN.com users what they thought of the Rangers' offseason moves and their chances in 2002-03. Here is a sampling of your responses:
Nice to see that the Rangers made some offseason moves that addressed their needs, rather than just paying big bucks for the top names on the market (although, they did spend some money, it was well spent). I am thrilled at the coaching change, and look forward to seeing the Rangers play within the framework of an actual system, rather than the professional pond hockey they have been pedaling for the last five years or so. The question as always is chemistry, chemistry, chemistry. They've got the parts, time to see how well they work together.
Adam Felenstein
The Rangers have the most complete team they have had since 1994. Discipline has been lacking in their club for many years. With the signing of a player as complete as Bobby Holik, in terms of offensive, defensive, and leadership ability, they've taken a strong step toward creating a team that is more disciplined.
Alex Roberts
The bottom line is this: MIKE RICHTER. We all know Sather wanted a top-end goalie, and he missed out. Richter will not be able to hold up if the Rangers are planning on a Stanley Cup run.
Aaron Scheible
If they can play team defense this year in front of Richter, it will be a much better year. I think Coach T will instill two-way hockey into some these guys (who) forgot that there are two sides to a hockey rink.
Fred Parker
The Rangers are going to finish the same way they did last season: missing the playoffs. They have too many players that do not give themselves up for the team. The Rangers have players who are missing the character (Bure) and chemistry to make it to the playoffs; (players who) only play for themselves and not the team or give up when the pressure is on (Nedved). So it will be one more season without the the boys in blue in the playoffs.
Mike Conlon
Glad to see they got Holik and Kasparaitis. They needed to bring a new attitude and leadership to this team. Lindros and Leetch are not the leaders we were hoping for ... We now have grit and these players hate to lose.
Greg McFadzen
The Rangers have to get the right group of people together before they will be successful. They proved (the) last couple of years that throwing money at any available players doesn't guarantee you a playoff spot. Until they get players with good chemistry together, they will continue to fail.
J.J. Rogers
It really doesn't matter how many stars you buy if you don't have any goaltending. And Mike Richter is not the answer in goal.
Matt Adamcheski
The Rangers have finally spent some money on free agents that address their needs, not just grabbing the biggest names out there because they're there. Not to say Lindros wasn't what this team needed last year. I think he was exactly what they needed. A focal point. A rallying point. Somebody with a lot of attention and somebody to rally behind. He was a fantastic starting point. ... Lindros, Holik, Kasparaitis to play with Messier- - all have the ability to grind it out and play with a lot of character.
Andrew Latham
The new Ranger$ are the kings of the offseason every year. Fleury -- No Playoffs. Messier -- No Playoffs. Lindros -- No Playoffs. Following the trend, looks like they are heading toward the links in early April again this year.
Tom Staada
The Rangers have finally seen the light. It's taken years, or maybe Detroit's Grind Line, to show what New York has been missing for years. Role players. Holik and Kasparaitis are the role players they've been missing. Not sure it's enough, but in the topsy turvy East, I wouldn't be surprised to see a run out of these guys.
Rob Hubbard
All the money in the world couldn't buy team chemistry. So keep spending on free agents and have fun watching the playoffs ... for the sixth straight year.
