Kirk Muller has been hired as an assistant coach for the St. Louis Blues, the team announced Tuesday.

"We are excited to add Kirk to our staff," Blues president of hockey operation and general manager Doug Armstrong said. "He was a Stanley Cup-winning player, and as a coach, has shown excellent communication skills, and the ability to relate to both young and veteran players."

Muller was fired as head coach of the Carolina Hurricanes earlier this month after going 80-80-27 in three seasons.

Muller, 48, made six All-Star teams during a 19-year career that saw stops with six clubs.
