Playing in Europe became an option after Kotalik did not report to the Sabres' American Hockey League farm club in Rochester upon clearing waivers Monday.
He's a nine-year NHL veteran, who was reacquired by Buffalo in a trade with Calgary in June. From the former Czechoslovakia, Kotalik expressed a desire to play in Europe rather than in the minors.
The Sabres waived Kotalik to get under the NHL salary cap. He's set to make $3 million this season.
His agent, Larry Kelly, has not returned two messages.
