The Red Wings have called up goalie Joey MacDonald to back up Ty Conklin.
Howard will be re-evaluated when the Red Wings, who are on a four-game road trip, return to Detroit Tuesday.
Howard, a 2010 Calder Trophy finalist for rookie of the year, leads the NHL with 32 wins and is fifth in the league with a 2.03 goals-against average.
