EDMONTON -- The Edmonton Oilers have hired former coach Craig MacTavish as senior vice president of hockey operations.

The 53-year-old MacTavish coached the Oilers for eight seasons from 2000-09, including Edmonton's run to the Stanley Cup final in 2006 when it lost in seven games to the Carolina Hurricanes.

The London, Ontario, native was fired after the Oilers missed the playoffs for a third straight season.

MacTavish spent this past season coaching the Vancouver Canucks' AHL affiliate, the Chicago Wolves.

The Oilers are looking for a new coach to replace Tom Renney.

MacTavish was a hockey analyst with TSN for two seasons before coaching the Wolves. He also earned a masters degree in business from Queen's during the two years he wasn't coaching hockey.
