Jaromir Jagr aggravates calf injury

Philadelphia -- Veteran Philadelphia winger Jaromir Jagr played only two shifts and 1:08 after the first period of Monday's Winter Classic after he aggravated a calf injury he sustained in the previous game.

"I got spear in the last game and it was swelling ... and it was getting worse and worse," Jagr said after the Flyers were upended 3-2 by the New York Rangers Monday.

Jagr, a five-time scoring champion, has enjoyed terrific chemistry with linemates Claude Giroux and Scott Hartnell this season and is third in team scoring with 31 points in 33 games.

That line was dominant in the first period of Monday's game and created a number of scoring chances before Jagr left the ice with just over three minutes left in the opening frame.

"I know there was the swelling," he said. "I just couldn't skate hard and I didn't just want to be there to be there. I knew at that point I couldn't help my teammates," he said.

Jagr did return for the second period and skated two brief shifts. He also sat on the bench during the third period to support his teammates.

"Why not? It's not going to make it worse. I wanted to be with my teammates. And maybe you never know we would get a shot 5-on-3 you don't have to skate that much 5-on-3," Jagr said.
