Oracle selected for next America's Cup

Associated Press

AUCKLAND, New Zealand -- San Francisco's Golden Gate Yacht Club and the Oracle syndicate of software billionaire Larry Ellison were selected as the next America's Cup Challenger of Record on Sunday.

Golden Gate's acceptance as the first challenge for the next Cup regatta was announced only minutes after Alinghi of Switzerland crossed the finish line to complete a 5-0 rout of New Zealand in the 31st Cup match.

Alinghi beat Oracle in the challenger finals to advance to the America's Cup match.

The Challenger of Record, whose challenge is -- symbolically -- the first accepted by a new Cup winner, helps draft Cup rules and liaises between the Cup defender and other challengers.

Golden Gate is a small, blue-collar yacht club on the shores of San Francisco Bay. It was chosen by Oracle chief executive Ellison three years ago as the host club for his first Cup challenge.
