Claressa Shields earns London spot
QINHUANGDAO, China -- Claressa Shields has earned a shot to box for gold at the London Games.
USA Boxing spokeswoman Julie Goldsticker confirmed Friday that Shields qualified for the Olympics by being a top-two finisher from the Americas at the world women's boxing championships in China.
The 17-year-old, 165-pound middleweight from Flint, Mich., called her coach, Jason Crutchfield, earlier in the day to share the news. She is a junior at Flint Northwestern High School.
