Malysz wins fifth World Cup event this season

Associated Press

PREDAZZO, Italy -- Continuing his domination of World Cup ski jumping, Poland's Adam Malysz on Friday scored his fifth victory this season by taking the individual K120 event in this north Italian resort.

With jumps of 131 and 130 meters, the Polish skier piled up a winning total of 272.8 points, stretching his lead in the World Cup standings.

With five victories, two seconds and a third place in eight events, he has 710 points overall.

Andreas Widhoelzl of Austria placed second Friday, with 266.3 points on jumps of 130 and 128.5 meters.

Switzerland's Simon Ammann placed third with 265.5 points.

Japan's Kazuyoshi Funaki, third in Villach, Austria, earlier this month, was a distant 15th, with jumps of 121 and 116.5 meters and a total of 231.6 points.

His form made Malysz a firm favorite for the prestigious Four Hill tournament in Germany and Austria over the New Year period and for a medal at the 2002 Winter Olympics.
