OBERSTDORF, Germany -- Sven Hannawald delighted a home crowd Sunday by upsetting Polish star Adam Malysz and winning the first leg of the Four Hills ski jumping competition.
Malysz, the winner of the tournament last year, was fifth. This was his worst performance in a season in which he has won six of 10 World Cup events.
Hannawald made two jumps of 122.0 meters and was awarded a total of 260.2 points.
"This is an absolute dream day," the German said. "I knew in yesterday's training that everything was going well. Then I got here today and saw that the conditions were not so good. I saw the crowd and I got very nervous."
Austria's Martin Hoellwarth landed the day's longest jump, 129.0 meters on his second attempt. He took second place, recording 115.0 meters in the first round and earning 252.2 points.
Rising Swiss star Simon Ammann was third with jumps of 119.0 and 122.0 meters and 248.7 points.
"That I would be allowed to sit here with the winners, I never imagined," he said.
Malysz had jumps of 117.5 and 119.5 meters for 245.1 points. He holds an overwhelming lead in the World Cup standings with 855 points. Hannawald is second with 499 and Hoellwarth is third with 397.
The heavy rain Saturday gave way to heavy snow. Then the sun broke through, giving the first of this four-leg competition a perfect Alpine setting.
The overall winner must perform well on all four hills -- Oberstdorf and Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Germany and Innsbruck and Bischofshofen in Austria. The next competition is in Garmisch-Partenkirchen on Tuesday. |
