Hughes pulls out of Champions of Ice tour

Associated Press

SALT LAKE CITY -- Sarah Hughes won't be making an encore performance at the Delta Center on Friday.

Citing a mild abdominal strain, the 17-year-old Olympic gold medalist has withdrawn from the John Hancock Champions on Ice show. Her doctor advised scaling back her skating, organizers said.

"I am very disappointed that I will not be able to perform in the city where my dreams came true in February,'' Hughes said in a statement. "I wanted to personally be there to see the fans and thank them for their encouragement throughout the Olympics.''

Hughes scored one of the biggest upsets in Olympic history by winning the women's free skate Feb. 21, soaring from fourth place to first to beat Irina Slutskaya of Russia and six-time U.S. champion Michelle Kwan.

Hughes has performed in about half of the stops on the 85-city Champions on Ice tour, which began in April and ends Aug. 8.

Men's gold medalist Alexei Yagudin of Russia, out with a hip injury, also will miss the Salt Lake show, along with gold medalist ice dancers Marina Anissina and Gwendal Peizerat of France, who are skating in a show in England.

Skaters expected to perform include Kwan, Slutskaya, men's silver medalist Evgeny Plushenko and men's bronze medalist Timothy Goebel.
