Olympic champ Hughes not certain of future

Associated Press

BALTIMORE -- Olympic champion Sarah Hughes dropped off the Champions on Ice skating tour that begins Friday in Baltimore.

Hughes, who finished sixth at last week's World Figure Skating Championships, indicated she was uncertain if she wanted to continue skating. A high school senior, she also is considering several college options, including Harvard, to which she received an early acceptance.

"I tried to do too much," Hughes said after worlds. "I took a full load in high school, even though I'm only there half a day. I've tried to train. I did a TV special where I was the only person skating and I had to do five new numbers for that. I have two major endorsement deals that I have a lot of obligations to, and I've just been running everywhere."

Even without Hughes, the lineup for the tour is a strong one, featuring nearly all of the medalists at the world championships. Michelle Kwan, who won her fifth world title, and Evgeni Plushenko, who took his second crown, will headline the 27-city tour.

Also planning to skate on the tour is Russia's Irina Slutskaya, who won the 2002 world title, but missed last week's event to be with her ailing mother.
