TOKYO -- France won a spot in the men's volleyball
tournament at the Athens Olympics on Saturday after defeating Japan
in a qualifying tournament.
France improved its record to 6-0 by winning 25-23, 21-25,
25-18, 21-25, 15-12. Until this match, France hadn't dropped a set
in the tournament.
Eight nations are competing in the seven-day, round-robin event.
The overall winner and the best Asian team gain berths for Athens.
Earlier, Australia moved a step closer to an Olympic berth with
a straight-sets victory over China. Australia can seal a place at
Athens with a win over Iran on Sunday, the tournament's final day.
In other matches, Canada (4-2) defeated South Korea (1-5) and
Iran (3-3) beat winless Algeria.
