Defenseman says he'll stay in Detroit

STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- Detroit Red Wings defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom is too rusty to play in the upcoming World Championships because he hasn't spent enough time on the ice in the wake of the NHL lockout.

"It'd be hard to get back in shape in time for the Worlds when you haven't played any league hockey this winter," Lidstrom said.

The World Championships will be played April 30 to May 15 in Innsbruck and Vienna, Austria.

The two-time Norris Trophy winner told Swedish tabloid Expressen he will sit out the Worlds and instead stay in Detroit with his family and friends.
