Destinee Hooker leads U.S. in first round

MATSUMOTO, Japan -- The United States improved to 2-0 at the women's volleyball world championships with a 25-16, 25-13, 25-23 win over Croatia on Saturday.

Destinee Hooker led the way with 15 points and Logan Tom added 12 for the Americans, who are No. 2 in the world rankings.

The United States beat Thailand on Friday and next faces Germany in Group C.

Top-ranked Brazil needed five sets for a 22-25, 25-22, 23-25, 25-20, 15-9 win over the Czech Republic.

The first round has four six-team groups and a round-robin schedule. The top four teams in each pool advance to the second round for crossover play. The semifinals and final will be played Nov. 13-14 in Tokyo.
