Saturday: U.S. golds in archery, kayak, water skiing

ARCHERY
The powerful Americans swept the gold in team competition, led by their individual champions.

First, the U.S. women -- individual gold medalist Jennifer Nichols (Cheyenne, Wyo.), bronze medalist Stephanie Miller (Naperville, Ill.) and Janet Dykman (El Monte, Calif.) -- beat Venezuela 234-206. Then they defeated Mexico 231-216.

On the men's side, Vic Wunderle (Mason City, Ill.), Guy Krueger (Blessing, Texas) and Glenn Meyers (Grand Rapids, Mich.) routed Colombia 237-202, then they also defeated Mexico, but in a tighter match, 245-237.

BOXING
Likar Ramos of Colombia easily outpointed featherweight Aaron Garcia (Vista, Calif.), 33-12.

Cuba won two more gold medals, by Yuriolkis Gamboa and Odlanier Solis Fontes, giving it six in boxing. Patric Lopez of Venezuela and Juan Ubaldo of the Dominican Republic also got gold.

CANOE-KAYAK
Ruth Nortje (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) and Kathy Colin (Kailua, Hawaii) each earned gold medals. Nortje won the first gold for the U.S. kayakers by sprinting to victory in the 500 meters singles race. Ninety minutes later, Nortje and Colin cruised to an easy victory in the women's doubles at 500 meters.

Argentina's Javier Correa completed his second consecutive sweep of the men's kayak singles by winning the 500.

Karel Aguilar of Cuba took the 500-meter men's canoe singles, and the Brazilian men's doubles team of Carlos Campos and Fabio Demarchi won gold.

Cuba also won the men's canoe doubles.

CYCLING
In the women's 85-kilometer race, Joanka Gonzalez of Cuba edged Janildes Silva of Brazil, for gold. The United States did not participate.

EQUESTRIAN
The individual jumping gold went to Mark Watring of Puerto Rico, followed by Chris Kappler of Pittstown, N.J., and Margie Goldstein-Engle of Wellington, Fla.

SWIMMING
Kara Lynn Joyce (Ann Arbor, Mich.) broke the games record twice 50-meter freestyle. In the preliminaries, she swam a 25.29. In the final, Joyce won her first individual medal in an international competition with a 25.24.

Jamie Reid of Puyallup, Wash., who won the 200 backstroke just ahead of Diana MacManus of Irvine, Calif.

The U.S. men won the final swimming event, the 400 medley relay, in a games mark of 3:37.27. The swimmers were Peter Marshall (Atlanta), Mark Gangloff (Akron, Ohio), Ben Michaelson (Seymour, Conn.) and Nick Brunelli (Norwood, Mass).

Other winners in the pool were George Bovell of Trinidad and Tobago in the 200 individual medley in a Pan Ams record 1:59.49; Ricardo Monasterio, Venezuela, in the 1,500 freestyle over Fran Crippen (Philadelphia) and Christopher Thompson (Roseburg, Ore.); and Audrey Lacroix of Canada in the 200 butterfly over Noelle Bassi (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) and Dana Kirk (Bremerton, Wash.).

TAEKWONDO
Victor Estrada of Mexico won the 90-kilogram class over Rowell Jerez of the Dominican Republic. The women's 67-kilos gold medalist was Gina Ruiz, Dominican Republic, with Sanaz Shahbazi (San Jose, Calif.) getting bronze.

VOLLEYBALL
The U.S. women surprised Brazil in four sets for the bronze medal. The Americans won 25-23, 25-19, 17-25, 25-19.

Wiz Bachman (Lakeville, Minn.) had 18 points to lead Team USA. Nicole Branagh (Orinda, Calif.) added 17, and 16-year-old Cynthia Barboza (Long Beach, Calif.) provided a spark with clutch blocking and offense.

Later, the Dominican Republic beat Cuba in a thrilling five-set match to win the gold, 25-16, 25-17, 14-26, 26-28, 15-13. Police had to seal the doors to the overpacked arena and spray the crowd outside waiting to get in with a chemical substance before the match.

The overflow of fans was sent to an adjacent pavilion to watch on giant TV screens.

WATER SKIING
Three Americans won gold medals.

Freddy Krueger (Winter Garden, Fla.) was the jumping champion with 67.00 points. Regina Jaquess (Suwanee, Ga.) took the women's tricks competition at 6,960, with Rhoni Barton (Orlando, Fla.) just behind.

The women's slalom went to Karen Truelove (Winter Garden, Fla.), who beat out Jaquess.

Other winners were Drew Ross of Canada in men's slalom; Karissa Wedd of Canada in women's jumping, with Barton second and Jaquess third; and Jaret Llewellyn of Canada in men's tricks, with Russell Gay (Winter Garden, Fla.) winning silver.

WEIGHTLIFTING
Ecuador's Boris Burov won the 105-kilogram division ahead of Michel Batista, Cuba, and William Solis, Colombia. Peter Kelley, St. Joseph, Mo., finished fourth.

2000 Olympian and 1999 Pan American Games gold medalist Shane Hamman (Mustang, Okla.) withdrew from the 105-kilogram competition with a hamstring injury.

The women's 75-kilo class went to Carmensa Delgado, Colombia. Hidelgar Morillo, Venezuela, won the 105-plus category.

No Americans competed in either women's division.
