Denise Karbon needs knee surgery

MILAN -- Italian skier Denise Karbon will be out about a month with a right knee injury that will require surgery, the latest in a series of operations that have slowed her career.

The Italian Winter Sports Federation said on Thursday that Karbon was injured in training and will miss the Nov. 13 slalom in Levi, Finland.

The 30-year-old giant slalom specialist opened the season with a solid first run in the GS in Soelden, Austria, last month but fell in the second leg.

Karbon won five consecutive GS races in 2007-08 but hasn't won since.
