Henry notches world record to reach final

ATHENS, Greece -- Jodie Henry of Australia set a world
record in the Olympic 100-meter freestyle semifinals Wednesday

Henry came from behind to win her heat in 53.52 seconds,
lowering the mark of 53.66 set by countrywoman Lisbeth Lenton at
the Australian trials in March. Henry overtook Inge de Bruijn of
the Netherlands and American Natalie Coughlin to advance to
Thursday's final.

"Oh my God, that was nuts," Henry said. "My parents are here,
my cousins are here, aunts and uncles. It is just so good to do it
in front of them."

Lenton didn't qualify for the final. She finished ninth, missing
the last spot by nine-hundredths of a second.

It was Henry's second world mark of the Olympic meet. She passed
American Jenny Thompson in the final leg of the 400 freestyle relay
Saturday to give Australia the gold in world-record time. Henry
swam her 100 split in 52.95.

Jedrzejczak wins 200 fly, her third medal
ATHENS, Greece -- Otylia Jedrzejczak of Poland won her third
medal of the Olympics, overtaking Australia's Petria Thomas to win
gold in the 200-meter butterfly Wednesday night.

Thomas was under world-record pace halfway through the race,
building a body-length lead, but Jedrzejczak had enough left to
overtake the Aussie in the final 50. The winner touched in 2:06.05,
just off her own world mark of 2:05.78 set two years ago.

Jedrzejczak avenged a loss to Thomas in the 100 fly, winning the
first gold medal of her career.

Thomas settled for silver at 2:06.36, while Japan's Yuko
Nakanishi edged out American Kaitlin Sandeno for the bronze at
2:08.04. Sandeno was just 14-hundredths of a second behind in
fourth, failing to win her third medal of the Athens Games.

Sandeno was set to return later in the evening to anchor the
U.S. 800 freestyle relay team, a contender for gold.

Jedrzejczak is emerging as one of the biggest female stars of
the Olympic swimming meet. She already had won a pair of silvers in
the 400 free and 100 butterfly before winning her first career

Thomas also is having a superb Olympics. Though she failed to
sweep the butterflies, she did add to the two golds she's already
won in the 100 fly and 400 freestyle relay.
