Loukas captures second straight U.S. 1-meter title

PASADENA, Calif. -- Christina Loukas tuned up for the
Beijing Olympics by defending her 1-meter title at the U.S.
national diving championships on Thursday night.

Loukas won with 264.80 points, edging her synchronized diving
partner Amanda Miller of Centreville, Va., who finished second with

Kassidy Cook, a 13-year-old competitor from The Woodlands,
Texas, was third at 244.30.

Loukas, of Riverwoods, Ill., also won the 1-meter - a
non-Olympic event - last year. Loukas, Miller and Cook will compete
in Saturday's finals on 3-meter springboard, the event Loukas
earned an Olympics berth.

In men's 3-meter, Kristian Ipsen of Clayton, Calif., led the
semifinals with 436.45 points.

Terry Horner of Longwood, Fla., who won the men's 1-meter title
Wednesday, was second at 396.00, followed by Matt Cooper of
Bethesda, Md., in third at 395.25.

The trio advanced to Sunday's finals at the Rose Bowl Aquatic
Center, where Olympian Troy Dumais is expected to compete. Chris
Colwill likely will dive only in Sunday's 3-meter synchro finals
with teammate and fellow Olympian Jevon Tarantino.
