IOWA CITY, Iowa -- David Boudia scored six 10s for a near-perfect dive and won the men's platform final Sunday at the USA Diving winter national championships.
Boudia executed a three-and a half reverse summersault dive that totaled 578.05 points.
"Definitely had the most adrenaline pumping in that last one," said Boudia, a 2008 Olympian. "It came down to that dive. If I hit it then I win it, if I don't then I lose."
Christina Loukas and Cassidy Krug ended in a rare tie for the top spot on the women's three-meter springboard, while Mary Beth Dunnichay, the youngest member of the 2008 Olympic team, and Katherine Bell won the women's platform synchronized contest.
Individual scores are calculated after five dives. Of the seven judges' tallies, the five mid-ranging scores are averaged and multiplied by a pre-determined degree of difficulty for each dive. The complex scoring formula makes ties unlikely in diving. The tie on the springboard was the first ever in USA Diving national championships, which began in 1905.
Krug saved her twist group for her final dive, and averaged an 8.0 from the judges.
"It's one of my steadiest dives and I like to leave it for my last," said Krug, a member of the 2010 World Cup team. "My last dive was my full out. I knew I had to hit it."
Krug initially retired from diving after finishing eighth at the Olympic Trials leading up to the 2008 Beijing games. Nine months later, she was back in competition.
"I just needed some distance" Krug said. "I realized that I missed it very much and I still wanted to make an Olympic team."
The winter nationals, which began Jan. 30, is the first opportunity for divers to qualify for the 2012 Olympic team trials. Several Olympic athletes competed this week, including Kelci Bryant, who won the senior women's one-meter springboard, and Troy Dumais, a three-time Olympian who teamed with Kristian Ipsen to win the synchronized men's three-meter springboard.
Boudia won the synchronized men's platform with Nick McCrory.
Loukas, a 2008 Olympian, earned a berth in the upcoming USA Diving grand prix in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. From there, divers can qualify for this summer's world championships in Shanghai, China.
Earlier this week, Krug and 2010 junior world champion Kassidy Cook won the synchronized women's three-meter springboard; Brandon Watson won the senior men's one-meter springboard; Harrison Jones took the top spot in the senior men's three-meter springboard; and 2009 world championships team member Brittany Viola won the senior women's platform.
