Mattia Gavazzi banned 2½ years
ROME -- Cyclist Mattia Gavazzi has been banned for 2½ years by the Italian Olympic Committee's anti-doping court following a second offense for cocaine.
Gavazzi tested positive following the prologue of the 2010 Settimana Lombarda race in Bergamo. He won the second stage of the race two days later.
Gavazzi was suspended for 14 months for a cocaine offense when he was an amateur in 2004.
The court gave Gavazzi a six-year ban Monday but then suspended more than half of it because Gavazzi cooperated with CONI's investigation.
The ban was backdated to start March 31, 2010, and will expire Sept. 30 this year.
