Fabian Cancellara breaks collarbone
BASEL, Switzerland -- Olympic time trial champion Fabian Cancellara has undergone surgery for a broken collarbone after crashing during the Tour of Flanders.
His RadioShack team said Monday that Cancellara fractured his right collarbone in four parts the day before. The Swiss rider will discuss his timetable for a return during a news conference Tuesday at the clinic in Basel, Switzerland, where he was treated.
The team says Cancellara's collarbone was pinned together. He will require a further "small routine operation" when the bone has healed.
Cancellara, who won the Flanders classic in 2010, crashed at a riders' feeding station with 38 miles remaining. Local favorite Tom Boonen won a record third title on the Belgian cobblestones.
