CATANIA, Sicily -- Andrea Cassara won his first major individual gold medal to give Italy's men's squad its third consecutive victory at the fencing world championships Thursday.
After beating fellow Italian Valerio Aspromonte 15-14 in the foil final, Cassara said he had been dreaming of such a victory since he was 5.
Cassara won gold in the foil team event at the 2004 Athens Olympics and had taken three golds in team events at previous worlds, but this was his first individual victory at a worlds or Olympics.
Aldo Montano and Paolo Pizzo won gold for Italy on the opening two days of the competition, and Valentina Vezzali won her sixth individual world title Tuesday.
In the women's epee final, Li Na appeared to injure her leg after defeating Chinese teammate Sun Yujie 13-7.
