Rebecca Bross injures knee

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Defending champion Rebecca Bross is out of the U.S. gymnastics championships after injuring her right knee on vault.

Bross was still twisting when she landed Saturday night, and appeared to jam her knee. She collapsed to the mat, screaming, and coach Valeri Liukin immediately jumped up on the podium and called for trainers. As trainers looked at her knee, Bross covered her face with her hands and Liukin patted her on the head.

After several minutes, Bross' right leg was placed in an air cast and she was carried off the podium. She left the arena in a wheelchair, her leg elevated, and the crowd gave her a warm ovation.

This was Bross' first competition since having ankle surgery in November.
