Shani Davis wins 1,000m race at WCup

HEERENVEEN, Netherlands -- Shani Davis won the men's World Cup 1,000 meters Sunday to close the gap on Stefan Groothuis at the top of the standings to just 40 points.

Davis was the only skater to go under 1 minute, 9 seconds at the Thialf oval, clocking 1:08.88 to edge Groothuis in a head-to-head duel in the final pair. Kjeld Nuis was third.

The two-time Olympic 1,000 champion Davis has won the last three World Cup races at the distance.

Heather Richardson earlier won the women's 1,000 to give the United States both individual golds contested Sunday, finishing in 1:15.82 to move up to third in the season rankings.

Ireen Wust was second and her Netherlands teammate Marrit Leenstra came third. World Cup leader Christine Nesbitt of Canada did not race.
