PARIS -- New indoor pole vault world record-holder Renaud Lavillenie will not defend his title in the world championships next month because of a foot injury.
Soon after breaking Sergei Bubka's 21-year-old record in Donetsk, Ukraine, on Saturday with 6.16 meters, Lavillenie botched an attempt at 6.21 and needed 16 stitches in his left foot.
He says on Monday, "it's not worth taking the slightest risk for the future."
Bubka was on hand in his hometown to see and encourage Lavillenie to break his record of 6.15.
Olympic champion Lavillenie won gold at the last indoor worlds in Istanbul two years ago. This year's event takes place in Sopot, Poland on March 7-9.
