Crosby scores on 2nd SO try to lift Canada over feisty Swiss
Updated: February 19, 2010, 3:35 AM ET
Sidney Crosby made all the difference for Canada this time around.
After Canada surrendered a two-goal lead to Switzerland, Crosby scored on his second shootout attempt to lift the gold-medal favorites to a 3-2 win in the extra session.
Complicated Comeback
There wasn't just good news from this Canadian comeback, writes ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun. Story
Four years ago, Crosby wasn't a part of the Canadian Olympic men's hockey team that suffered a shocking 2-0 loss to Switzerland in Torino, Italy during group play. That loss led to a disappointing placement after the group round for a team that ultimately finished seventh in the tournament.
A loss this time around would've been more humiliating than damaging to Canada's chances of winning the Olympic tournament. Still, this way-too-close of a call -- with an own goal clinking in off the skate of Patrick Marleau and goaltender Martin Brodeur not even coming close to stopping a shot he saw the entire way -- is sure to have the country buzzing and the rest of the teams wondering whether the pressure is getting to the guys with maple leafs on their jerseys.
The Canadians next matchup is Sunday against the U.S. The Americans hold a one-point advantage in the standings heading into a matchup that could decide which team will get a bye into the quarterfinals.
