Toronto businessman takes over as commish of CFL

Sports Ticker

EDMONTON, Alberta -- Toronto businessman Tom Wright was named CFL commissioner Saturday.

Wright won unanimous approval from the league's Board of Governors on the eve of the Grey Cup. He succeeds B.C. Lions owner David Braley, who has served as interim commissioner since Michael Lysko was dismissed last March.

The 11th commissioner in CFL history, Wright served most recently as president and chief operating officer of Envoy Communications, an international design, marketing and technology company. Before that, he worked as president and CEO of Solomon North America, a subsidiary of sporting goods giant adidas.

Wright has been involved with Special Olympics Canada for 14 years, serving as vice chairman in 2002.

Wright was recommended to the board by the executive search firm of Russell Reynolds Associates. He will be on hand at Commonwealth Stadium on Sunday to present the Grey Cup to the Edmonton Eskimos or Montreal Alouettes.
