It seems to start earlier and earlier every summer. And it seems to become more and more irrelevant every year. Yes, people, the NFL preseason is under way, so try to contain your excitement. Page 2's Brian Murphy says it's time for fans to revolt against this monthlong marathon of meaningless exhibition games.

Mystery Photo Bizarre & Bogus
We know that Paul Tagliabue will go to almost any length to drum up interest in the NFL, but we're still a little confused about why the commish was banging on this drum over in Japan last week. If you can help explain what's going in Page 2's Mystery Photo, drop us a note. We'll run the best responses Tuesday.

9]  Reds send Hank Sauer and Frankie Baumholtz to Cubs for Harry "Peanuts" Lowrey and Harry "The Hat" Walker (June 15, 1949)
The Cubs were awful in 1949, but a third of the way through the season they did something right, sending Lowrey and Walker to Cincinnati in exchange for outfielders Sauer and Baumholtz.
8]  Mariners trade Randy Johnson to Astros for Freddy Garcia, Carlos Guillen and John Halama (July 31, 1998)
Mariners fans and players were furious about the trade -- all they got in return for the ace of aces were three minor-leaguers. But Mariners GM Woody Woodward looked pretty smart, in retrospect.
