Fearless forecast for college football in '01
Special to Page 2

Only a few hours have passed since Oklahoma shut down Florida State in the Orange Bowl to win its seventh national title. But it's not too early to look ahead to the 2001 college football season.

Ken Dorsey
Miami quarterback Ken Dorsey is a darkhorse candidate for the 2001 Heisman.
Here are five fearless predictions for next season from ESPN college football reporter Gene Wojciechowski:

1. Once again, Virginia Tech's Michael Vick will enter the season as the Heisman favorite. And once again, it will be a much closer race than expected, thanks to Nebraska's Eric Crouch, Miami's Ken Dorsey (our darkhorse pick), Auburn's Rudi Johnson, Northwestern's Damien Anderson, Wisconsin's Michael Bennett, UCLA's Freddie Mitchell and Michigan's David Terrell. Still, the pick is Vick.

2. If latest surprise hire Pete Carroll doesn't make an instant impact, USC might have a going-away press conference for athletic director Mike Garrett.

3. These coaches will feel the most heat: Utah's Ron McBride, Vanderbilt's Woody Widenhofer and Indiana's Cam Cameron.

4. Wisconsin's Barry Alvarez will be the next million-dollar coach.

5. The strangest sight of the season will be seeing Florida play Miami in the Rose Bowl for the national title.
