What was Pete Rose thinking?

So Crash Davis (Kevin Costner) delivers his impassioned and eloquent soliloquy in "Bull Durham" -- all about the sweet spot, soft-core pornography and long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days (among other things) -- and the only thing Annie Savoy (Susan Sarandon) can say in response is this:

Pete Rose
Did Pete actually think he'd get sympathy for his long overdue admission?
"Oh my."

Sometimes, that's the best we can do, too, when we come across the bizarre stuff that happens in our little world of sports and popular culture. And here at Page 2, we'd like to think we can do better than that. We'd like to think we'll have something more pithy to say than just, "Oh my."

That's why we're coming to you for help. We have no idea what might have been percolatin' in the minds of the people making the headlines lately. Maybe you can explain it to us in our latest edition of "What the Heck Are They Thinking?"

So check out the options for each questionable act or quote, and vote in the poll to move on to yet another strange (but true) story.

Oh, and "Oh my" is not an option here.

What the heck was Pete Rose thinking when he finally owned up to gambling on baseball after 14 years of denying that he'd ever placed a wager on the sport in which he played and managed?

A. "But I never bet against the Reds. Or on the Indians, for that matter."

B. "I would've come clean sooner, but 13 years was the over/under on how long it would take me."

C. "It's all a part of this 12-step program I'm taking at the Rick Neuheisel Center for Greedy Bastards."

D. "As long as I'm getting reinstated, I'd like to have my back-pay for the 14 years of baseball I missed. Pro-rated, please."

E. "I promised Jose Rijo I wouldn't say anything until he retired ... but I just couldn't wait any longer."

F. "Finally, my pants will actually go out when I douse them with water."
