Paur wins first bracelet

The final table of Event 18 didn't play out as everyone expected. Yes, many believed 24-year-old Taylor Paur would emerge with the bracelet based on his experience, but not many expected it to occur in such strange fashion. Despite the best efforts of Roy Weiss, Paur did manage to capture the Event 18 title and $340,260. This was his 10th WSOP cash and third WSOP final table.

According to the WSOP, Paur eliminated both Kyle Cartwright and Ryan Austin to extend his lead at the start of the final table and simply used aggression to pick on his opponents and build his stack. DJ MacKinnon busted Dan Idema in seventh and Alex Barlow took out Phillip Hui in sixth, but the majority of pots in between simply went to Paur who was hyper-active preflop and received little to no resistance.

With five left, Paur remained on the preflop raise initiative while the other four players appeared to be simply trying to move up the pay scale. MacKinnon ran his kings into Barlow's aces to go out in fifth and on the very next hand, Barlow was rivered by Paur and was eliminated in fourth. Paur owned 85 percent of the chips in play to start three-handed action and proceeded to double up both of his opponents. Even with those mistakes, he was still in control and earned most of those chips back as he knocked out Tai Nguyen in third. He was poised to simply coast to victory … until he formally met Mr. Weiss.

Weiss battled back against Paur's aggression and managed to take the chip lead nearly 40 hands into heads-up play. Paur found his stride once again and surged to an 8:1 lead as the two headed for their dinner break. When they returned, Weiss had a new strategy and it quick took Paur off his game. Weiss began to move all-in anytime he entered the pot. He doubled up through Paur and took the lead, but even with the lead, the all-ins didn't stop. Paur tried not to play back at him too much and picked off Weiss (A-9>6-3) to gain the advantage again. After 23 hands of relative chaos at the table, Paur's hand held (A-5>K-8) when it mattered as he knocked out the first-time WSOP casher in second.

"I have never seen anything like it," said Paur afterward to the WSOP. "I can't imagine anyone just going all in every single hand. I could not believe it. We came back from dinner and before that he was not even raising, except on the button. Then, all the sudden he's raising and moving all-in. I said, 'Oh, so this is how he's going to play.' It was a bit of a surprise."

Paur has $1.2 million in career live tournament earnings, but this was his first major victory.

"As a poker player, this is it," he said. "I mean, the WSOP Main Event would be the dream. But winning the gold bracelet is a dream, too. It's hard to live in the moment, but I'm absolutely thrilled. It's hard to appreciate right now."
