Clint Bowyer turning page
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Clint Bowyer and Jeff Gordon spent New Year's Eve in the same place -- the Caribbean -- on P Diddy's $72 million yacht but apparently didn't settle their dispute from last season's Sprint Cup race at Phoenix.
Gordon intentionally wrecked Bowyer in the next-to-last Chase race, igniting a brawl on pit road and ending any chance the Michael Waltrip Racing driver had of winning the title.
Bowyer finished second in the final standings, 39 points behind Brad Keselowski. Gordon, fined $100,000, finished 10th.
Bowyer and Gordon didn't settle the issue when together during the season-ending banquet in Las Vegas or during the New Year's celebrity cruise around St. Barts that included driver Kevin Harvick, music mogul Rick Rubin, businessman Guy Oseary, Ne-Yo, model Lily Cole and celebrity chef Guy Fieri.
Gordon said he and Bowyer talked on the yacht, but he didn't get into specifics about what. Asked if they left friends again, he said, "We talked. I had a great New Year's (Eve).''
Gordon said the bigger question is how Bowyer and Harvick got on the yacht for what he called the "party of the year.''
We were just hanging out and on walks Harvick and Bowyer and a couple of other folks,'' he said with a laugh. "It was a great New Year's (Eve). I enjoyed myself very much.''
"God almighty. Already?" Bowyer said during the first of a three-day test at Daytona International Speedway when asked if the feud had been resolved. "This is 2013. I was on the damndest boat you've ever seen. We don't have big boats in Kansas. We don't have very big bodies of water.
"I think (Gordon) was on that same boat. There was a lot of other people on there. It was a big time being had. Yes, he was on there. He was on the same island. I'm pretty sure he was on there. It was pretty late."
Asked if the two bonded, Bowyer sarcastically said: "Yeah, we held hands and walked off and discussed the past year and enjoyed ourselves throughout the whole vacation. That was the one person I definitely wanted to vacation with. I could not wait to get there for that very reason.
"Is that what you wanted me to say?"
At Las Vegas, Bowyer didn't rule out getting revenge on Gordon this season. Asked to clarify whether the issue was ongoing or dead, he said: "Who cares?"
"Apparently you guys do way more than we do. I missed that deer that I saw out in Texas. That was more important on my offseason list than figuring out where I was going to vacation and who I was going to vacation with," Bowyer said.
