Ryan Villopoto picks up 3rd win
SAN DIEGO -- Ryan Villopoto raced to his third victory AMA Supercross in six rounds this year, beating Chad Reed in front of 58,782 fans at Qualcomm Stadium.
Villopoto, the Kawasaki star from Poulsbo, Wash., extended his lead in the season standings to six points over Reed, the Honda rider from Dade City, Fla.
Villopoto regained the lead from Reed as the duo came up to the white flag.
"The whoops were treacherous tonight," said Villopoto. "I knew it was important to be consistent every lap. Battling Reed on the last few laps was exciting and I was able to make a good pass. I'm happy to keep the red plate on my bike and am excited for the Dallas race next week."
KTM's Ryan Dungey, from Belle Plaine, Minn., was third.
In the Western Regional Supercross Lites Class, Kawasaki's Dean Wilson raced to his second victory of the season.
"I'm absolutely ecstatic with the win," said Wilson, from Menifee, Calif. "I knew I needed to run consistent laps out there and get through the whoops as fast as I could all night long."
