Gophers, Crimson Tide nab top prospects

Top 100 forward Kris Humphries, a Class 2003 prospect from Minnetonka-Hopkins, Minn., who received a release from his signed letter to Duke, has decided on Minnesota over Indiana and Iowa State, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Humphries, who has made an appeal to gain eligibility for next season following his release, averaged 25.5 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, five steals and 2.5 blocks as a senior. He was named Mr. Basketball in Minnesota and to the Parade and McDonald's All American teams.

Class 2004 guard Albert Webber, a Top 100 prospect from New Orleans-Higgins, La/Durham-Mt. Zion Academy, NC., has committed to Alabama over UConn, Texas, Charlotte, Arkansas and Iowa State.

Class 2004 guard Ty Rogers of Eddyville-Lyon County, Kty., committed to Western Kentucky.

Class 2004 forward/center Matt Terwilliger, a Top 100 prospect from Troy, Ohio, is near a decision between Ohio State and Cincinnati. Notre Dame has withdrawn an offer.

St. Bonaventure has signed Class 2003 guard Kern Carter of Toronto, Ontario, according to the Toronto Sun.

Fordham has signed Class 2003 guard Derrick Breland of Silver Spring, Md/Boston University/Hutchinson CC, Kan.

Western Carolina has signed two additional Class 2003 prospects, including forward Lunzaya Nlandu of Montreal, Quebec/Santa Fe CC, Fla; and guard Brandon Weaver of Las Vegas-Western, Nev/Cochise CC, Ariz.

Colgate has signed six Class 2003 prospects, including forwards Kendall Chones and Kyle Chones, both from Orange Village-Orange, Ohio/Fork Union MA, Va., and sons of former NBA player Jim Chones; guard Todd Checovich of North Hampton, NH/Philips Exeter Academy, Mass/New Hampton Prep, NH; guard/forward Dan Gentile of Midland Park, NJ/Bergen Catholic, NJ; forward/center Simon Knight of Berkeley-St. Mary's College HS, Cal; and guard Jon Simon of Phoenix-Sunnyslope, Ariz.

Hampton has signed Class 2003 guard Jared Woodley of Baltimore, Md/Howard CC, Md.

Florida A&M has signed Class 2003 guard Tony Tate of Jersey City, NJ/Globe Tech CC, NY.

Class 2003 forward Brandon Jeffers of Baltimore, Md/Howard CC, Md., signed with Radford.

North Texas signed Class 2003 guard Marqus Mitchell of Baton Rouge, La/State Fair CC, Mo.

Class 2003 guard Jesse Pellot-Ross of Richmond-Whythe, NC., picked VCU.

Holy Cross has signed four Class 2003 prospects, including forward Josh Kramer of San Diego-Torrey Pines, Cal; guard Keith Simmons of Kingston, NY; guard Torey Thomas of White Plains, NY/Stamford-Trinity Catholic, Conn; and forward Joe Young of Silver Spring-Montrose Christian, Md.

Harvard has signed four Class 2003 prospects, including forward Brian Darcy of Shrewsbury-St. John's, Mass; guard Jim Goffredo of LaCrescenta-LaCrescenta Valley, Cal; guard Ko Yada of Newport, Ore; and guard Jared Mitchell of Alva, Okla.

Florida State leads the 2003 Top Classes. Due to late signings and entries in the NBA Draft, final rankings will be determined in late June.

Class 2003:
Over 1100 Class 2003 prospects have made commitments or signed scholarship papers. Signings and commitments by conferences. The early period ran Nov. 13-20 and the late period was Apr. 16-May 15. Although the period for signing letters-of-intent which binds both parties has ended, players may still sign letters-of-agreement, which binds the school and not the athlete.

Florida State leads the Late Signing Period 2003 Top Classes. Final rankings in late June.

2002 NBA Draft:
The NBA selected only one high school and a single junior college prospect: Center/forward Amare Stoudemire of Orlando-Cypress Creek, Fla., was taken 9th in the first round by Phoenix, while Portland took forward Qyntel Woods of Northeast Mississippi CC, Miss., at No. 21 in the first round. The NBA passed on three other high school/prep school prospects and seven JC players (List).
