FORT WORTH, Texas -- Indianapolis 500 winners A.J. Foyt and Johnny Rutherford will be the first inductees into the Texas Motorsports Hall of Fame.

Foyt won at Indianapolis four times, and Rutherford was a three-time champion at the Brickyard.

The racing legends will be inducted during an awards gala Jan. 27 at Texas Motor Speedway, where the Hall of Fame will be located. The hall honors outstanding individuals in Texas motorsports, active or retired, with special emphasis given to Texans and individuals with accomplishments in Texas.

In addition to hall inductees, there are yearly awards.

Carroll Shelby will be recognized with the Bruton Smith Legends Award for lifetime achievement. IRL IndyCar Series driver Gil de Ferran, who won last year's Indianapolis 500 and then finished his career with a race in Texas, will receive the TMS Sportsmanship Award. The TMS racer of the year is NASCAR trucks driver Brendan Gaughan, who has won four straight races at the track.

"The inaugural class of the Texas Motorsports Hall of Fame makes a powerful statement about the role Texas plays in racing," said Eddie Gossage, general manager of Texas Motor Speedway.
