Saturday, June 9 Hamilton, McGehee injured at Texas ESPN.com news services INDIANAPOLIS -- IRL driver Davey Hamilton was listed in stable condition on Monday at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis after sustaining injuries in a crash on lap 73 of the Casino Magic 500 on Saturday at Texas Motor Speedway. Hamilton suffered severe injuries to both of his legs and feet when his car hit the fence exiting Turn 2. Hamilton was injured when he collided with Jaret Schroeder's No. 6 car. His injuries include damage to bones, muscles and blood vessels, and circulation to his feet, according to Dr. Henry Bock, director of medical services for the Indy Racing League. He was transferred Sunday afternoon from Parkland Hospital in Dallas to Indianapolis' Methodist Hospital by an air ambulance. Surgery at Parkland early June 10 and subsequent surgery at Methodist that night were directed at stabilizing the circulation and removal of damaged tissue. Early reconstruction of the multiple fractures was begun as well. Subsequent surgeries will be directed toward further reconstruction of bone, muscle and skin. Hamilton is under the care of a team of specialist physicians led by orthopedic surgeon Dr. Kevin Scheid. Schroeder's engine failed going into Turn 2 and he spun into Hamilton's car, which slammed into the wall and lost all four tires. Schroeder's car also sustained heavy damage. One of the tires from the accident slammed into the front end of Sarah Fisher's car. Fisher was the only of the three drivers to return to the race, but was more than 20 laps down when she got back on the track. Schroeder was treated at the infield car center and released. Robbie McGehee remained in Parkland Hospital in good condition on Monday after surgery early Sunday to repair a broken lower left leg. The 1999 Indianapolis 500 Bank One Rookie of the Year, McGehee was involved in a three-car accident on Lap 196 of the race, won by Scott Sharp. McGehee's No. 10 made contact with Greg Ray's No. 2 , and McGehee's sliding car then collided with Eddie Cheever Jr.'s No. 51 . Information from the Associated Press was used in this report. |
