Densham snares Funny Car track record

MADISON, Ill. -- Jim Head earned the provisional No. 1 qualifying position in the NHRA's Top Fuel division Friday in the Sears Craftsman Nationals at Gateway International Raceway.

Head drove down the quarter-mile strip in 4.667 seconds at 315.34 mph.

Gary Densham, Warren Johnson and Shawn Gann also led in their divisions.

Densham had a run of 4.889 at a track-record speed of 316.97 to lead in Funny Car.

Johnson set the track record in time with a 6.808 pass at 202.12 to pace Pro Stock.

Gann set the elapsed time track record of 7.136 at 187.31 in Pro Stock Bike.

Qualifying continues Saturday with final eliminations Sunday.
