Scelzi tops Funny Car qualifying
Associated Press

KENT, Wash. -- Gary Scelzi raced to his first top qualifying effort in Funny Car and the 34th of his drag racing career Saturday at Pacific Raceways near Seattle.

Scelzi claimed the lead position for the NHRA Nationals with a 4.964 second run at 299.33 mph in a Dodge Stratus. Scelzi, a two-time winner at the scenic Northwest quarter-mile track in Top Fuel, will attempt to score his first career Funny Car victory Sunday.

Larry Dixon and Greg Anderson were the top qualifiers in their respective pro categories at the $1.8 million race, the 14th of 23 events in the $50 million NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.

Dixon captured his third top qualifying effort of the season and 22nd of his career when he powered his Miller Lite dragster to a leading performance of 4.676 at 317.27.

Anderson set both ends of the track record in Pro Stock en route to his eighth No. 1 of the year and 11th of his career. He covered the distance in 6.754 at 205.19 in a Pontiac Grand Am.
