Bryce sees Harleys in the future
By Bill Stephens
ESPN

Bill Stephens George Bryce has little to complain about. And in drag racing, people like that are hard to find.

Between 2000 and 2002, Bryce and his Star Racing Pro Stock Motorcycle team with Angelle Savoie in the seat won three straight NHRA POWERade championships, rewrote the NHRA history books, and appeared to be on their way to a long-running racing dynasty.

But big changes after last season saw Angelle move to another team owned by Antron Brown, while Bryce, a master engine builder and tuner, took on the duties of guiding Reggie Showers into title contention and serving as consultant for "Fast Freddie" Collis, who will finish 2003 with a career-best top 10 spot in the NHRA bike standings.

With Geno Scali only a stone's throw from clinching this year's PSB championship, you might think that Bryce would be bemoaning the disappointment of a season without the big prize, but you'd be wrong. At this weekend's 3rd AC Delco Nationals at The Strip at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, he was upbeat, enthusiastic and grateful for the year he's had.

"Reggie and this team have come such a long way this year," he says. "We grew together as a team and learned to race as a unit and that's the part of all this that brings me the most satisfaction. What Angelle and I and the rest of the team accomplished in the past are things we'll always be proud of but it's a great feeling to know you don't have anything to prove."

Along with Angelle's three titles, Bryce won three additional bike championships with the late John Myers in 1992, 1993, and 1995. He is unsure of what his 2004 plans will be and admits that there are several options on the table as far as Star Racing is concerned. But the project that clearly lights his racing fire is the proposed Harley-Davidson entry expected to debut next year with Collis aboard as part of a joint venture with Harley aftermarket giant, S&S.

"I'm really excited about that Harley," says Bryce. "We recently made a few test passes with it down in Georgia and I think it's going to be a good bike almost immediately. I don't want to make the mistake of promising everyone it's going to start winning right away but it's a heck of a machine. We measured 300 horsepower at the rear wheels and the body is really sleek. We have our own setup on the engine and with 160 cubic inches and a five-inch bore, it's going to be quick.

"I think the time is coming when we'll see a lot more Harleys in the class. It's something the class needs and when we see more of them coming into the sport, it will bring lots of people to the events."

And when it happens, Bryce will have helped to achieve something else despite his having nothing left to prove.
