Jarrett gets that empty feeling in Texas
Associated Press

Jarrett
Jarrett
FORT WORTH, Texas -- Dale Jarrett was back at the front. Then he ran out of gas and got caught in his pit.

Jarrett led three times for 134 laps in the rain-delayed NASCAR Samsung/Radio Shack 500 on Monday. He was running second to Rusty Wallace on lap 229 when he ran out of gas on the backstretch.

After coasting a half-lap on the 1½-mile Texas Motor Speedway to the pits and getting refueled, Jarrett got trapped in his stall by eventual race runner-up Jeff Gordon.

Jarrett was trying to exit when Gordon, just in front of him, overshot his stall and had to back up to get in position. The cars were at an angle against each other, and Jarrett had to go in reverse to get out.

Jarrett, who started fifth in the UPS Ford, lost two laps and went on to finish 24th. He was the defending race champion at Texas.

"We basically ran out of gas, there's not much more to say," Jarrett said. "We had a good race car. I don't know if we had a fuel pickup problem or what, but it kind of ruined our day."

The fuel miscalculation came in first race with Todd Parrott back as Jarrett's crew chief.

Parrott was promoted to team manager in December when car owner Robert Yates hired Jimmy Elledge as crew chief. But Jarrett, who won 24 races in six years with Parrott, struggled with Elledge with just one top 10 finish.

Jarrett has seven straight top-five finishes in season points since joining Yates. He is 24th after seven races this year, his position unchanged after Monday.

Impressive Rookie
Rookie Jimmie Johnson had his fifth straight top-10 finish. He finished sixth, four spots behind Jeff Gordon, his car owner and Hendrick teammate.

"He's fun to watch," Gordon said. "He's been having more good days out there than me lately. But we've both been running good."

Gordon, who ended a career-long streak of 14 races without a top-five finish, had seen a lot of Johnson from behind. The rookie had finished ahead of him the previous four races.

While Johnson was in just his 10th race, Gordon made his 300th start. Gordon is the first Cup driver to make 300 straight starts at the beginning of his career. His first race was Atlanta in 1992, also the final race for racing legend Richard Petty.

Fewer cameras
Fox moved Monday's telecast of the postponed race to FX, one of its cable channels, and used 25 cameras instead of the 36 that had been planned for Sunday's broadcast on the main network.

Foyt's driver
A.J. Foyt is a Texas legend, but the former driver isn't having much luck as a car owner in his home state.

Stacy Compton, in his first year driving for Foyt, was fourth when there was a mandatory NASCAR caution 35 laps into the race. He got trapped in his pit by Michael Waltrip and lost 10 spots on that 22-second stop.

Compton went on to finish 19th.

Sparkplugs

  • A crowd of 225,000 had been expected for Sunday's race. Track officials estimated a crowd of 187,000 on Monday. ... Chevrolet hasn't won a Cup race this season. Chevrolet's 381 wins are the most by a manufacturer since 1972, but in that span had never gone this long without a win.
  • Wallace, who was third in the points standings with four top-10 finishes before Texas, led twice for 37 laps. When he went in front on lap 161, it was his first lead this season. Wallace finished 11th.
  • Radio Shack president Dave Edmonson was the substitute for 2002 baseball Hall of Fame inductee Ozzie Smith, who was supposed to wave the green flag as part of a promotion between NASCAR and major league baseball. Smith couldn't stay an extra day.
  • Car owner Richard Childress spent NASCAR's weekend off in the Arctic on a big game hunting expedition, hoping to bag a polar bear -- one of just five species of big game out of 31 he has yet to bag. He didn't get a polar bear -- and still hasn't gotten his first Winston Cup win this season from drivers Kevin Harvick, Jeff Green and Robby Gordon.
