COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Michael Weiss, the two-time U.S.
figure skating champion, suffered a stress fracture of his left
foot and has withdrawn from Skate America.
Weiss was injured Monday, sustaining a stress fracture to the
third metacarpal. Tuesday, he withdrew from the first event of
the Grand Prix circuit, which is scheduled for Colorado Springs
from Oct. 26-29.
The world championships bronze medalist is expected to be off
the ice for up to six weeks.
"My foot has been bothering me for a few weeks, so I went to my
doctor," Weiss said. "The X-rays showed that continuous pounding
on my foot has caused a stress fracture.
"It's just a setback. Trust me. I have been through it before,
so I know how to handle it. The doctor said it has already started
to heal, so I hope to be back on the ice very soon."
Last season, Weiss had a stress fracture in his left ankle, but
came back to win his second consecutive U.S title in Cleveland.
Weiss also won his second consecutive bronze medal at worlds.
Next on Weiss' schedule is the Cup of Russia in St. Petersburg,
Russia, on Nov. 16-19. A replacement for Weiss at Skate America has
not been selected.
