Yagudin captures short program

 Associated Press

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Russia's Alexei Yagudin won the men's short program Friday night in Skate America 2000.

Todd Eldredge, the five-time U.S. champion and 1996 world champion, was fifth after falling on his initial jump, a quad toe double toe, and later on a routine triple axel.

American Timothy Goebel was second and Canadian Emanuel Sandhu was third.

Yagudin's performance at 6,000 feet above sea level left him short of breath, despite spending a week in Breckenridge.

"I just hope not to skate in the mountains again," Yagudin said. "When I did the first two jumps I knew it would be hard to finish the program."

Yagudin landed a quad toe-triple toe as his first element.

Barbara Fusar-Poli and Maurizio Margaglio of Italy held the ice dance lead after the original dance portion.

Margarita Dbrobiaszko and Povilas Vanagas of Lithuania moved from fourth to second place after the original dance.

Canada's Shae-Lynn Bourne and Victor Kraatz are in third.

Jamie Sale and David Pelletier of Canada finished first in the pairs free skate. Xue Shen and Hongbo Zhao of China were second and Tatiana Totmianina and Maxim Marinin of Russia were third.

Americans Kyoko Ina and John Zimmerman were fourth. They skipped a lift because Zimmerman has a shoulder injury and had bronchial spasms earlier.
