New jumping event for figure skating

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia - - A new jumping competition for Olympic-eligible figure skaters will be held March 3-4 in Lyon, France.

The International Skating Union tried to hold the Top Jump competition four years ago but was unable to do so because of a problem with TV rights.

Organizers have invited 16 Olympic-eligible skaters - eight men, eight women - although others may try to qualify March 2.

The winner in each category will receive $20,000, with prizes of $15,000 for second and $10,000 for third.

Competitors will perform seven levels of jumps, ranging from a triple salchow to a quadruple-triple jump combination for men and from a triple toe loop to a triple axel for women. Jumps will be judged on a scale of 0-4 - 0 for failed and 4 for excellent.
